Meet the (trans)cribe!
Wynter Appleford (they/them/theirs) is a human being, recovering academic, and lifelong writer.
Raised in a house full of books on a Maine island and later forged in the fires of a 2010's women's & gender studies program, Wynter pulls from both their lived and professional experiences to create handmade zines and visual art that blend mediums, challenge what we think of as normal, and visualize a possible Queer future.
Their unapologetic poems, essays, and collage projects share an anti-binary perspective in an increasingly binary world. Wynter refuses to sit idly by and watch Queer perspectives be suppressed, and hopes that sharing from their point of view humanizes Queer people in a hostile moment of history. They center the artistic process and refuse to use AI in any part of creation. They believe that art should be accessible to everyone and that it is a necessary tool for social change.
Wynter is not attempting to be wealthy or famous from their work, and prioritizes the free sharing of art and information. They have many of their zines available for free digital download to increase access to radical Queer media and encourage trades with fellow artists. They also believe firmly in the value of self-publishing to combat censorship and the importance of fully owning the rights to one's own work, so they are not seeking out traditional publication avenues for their ideas at this time.
Wynter currently lives, creates, and works in Chicago, IL, with their wife Aiden (queerwitchtattoo.com).

Zines are revolutionary tools for the free sharing of ideas and art. Short for “magazine,” zines are usually small, self-published booklets that can be on any topic and can take many forms. Originating during the Harlem Renaissance, zines have a home in many sub- and countercultures due to the ease of creating, publishing, and sharing content! Queer folks and other marginalized communities have been sharing their thoughts, writings, art, poems, and more through zines for decades. They can be silly, serious, long, short, full of words or pictures, and have few limits on what they can look like or be. Anyone, anywhere can make a zine!

I love working in a variety of mediums! I am a writer and poet at heart, so much of my content takes the form of the written word. I also enjoy working with physical and digital collage, photography, and linocut carvings/etchings. I avoid placing artistic limits on myself whenever possible and I always am down to try something new! In general, I like to make stuff about the things I am interested in and enjoy. All my projects aim to bring us closer to a Queer future above all else.

A Queer future is one where the needs and wants of LGBTQ+ people are placed at the center of the way things are done on both a systemic and interpersonal level in our world. It includes abandoning hierarchies and systems that promote oppression and violence, everyone having full control and autonomy over what happens to their bodies, change being embraced as a necessary and exciting process in a person’s life, the elimination of binaries, and liberation for all oppressed people globally. We all benefit from LGBTQ+ liberation, and a Queer future is one where all people can be free to be themselves.
